Why this site exists
You’ve got a seed packet in your hand—maybe one you saved from last year, maybe one you bought on a whim—and you’re not sure whether to plant it. The soil is too dry. The sun hits the spot at the wrong time.
The instructions say ‘full sun’ but your balcony only gets three hours a day. The site exists because those questions matter.
Here, every plant is tested in real conditions: my own patch of soil, my inconsistent watering, my mistakes. No vague advice. No ‘ideal’ scenarios. Just what actually grows—and why some things fail even when you follow the rules.

Do you test plants in controlled conditions?
No. My ‘controlled’ setup is a raised bed in partial shade, where the soil dries out faster than the instructions say. If it works there, it’ll work in yours.
What do you get wrong most often?
Watering. I forget how much plants hate soggy roots, or how fast a pot can dry out in the sun. The fixes are always in the notes.
Why isn’t that plant here?
Maybe it’s finicky. Maybe I haven’t killed it yet. Maybe it’s not worth the effort. If it’s missing, it’s because I tried—and failed—or because I haven’t tried hard enough.
Vivian keeps a pair of gardening gloves in her purse at all times, even when she’s not gardening. She also has a habit of talking to her plants, which is why the neighbor thinks she’s either very patient or very strange.
How a plant guide is built
It starts with a seed—or a cutting, or a bulb dug up from someone else’s garden. The first question is always: *Will this even grow where I live?* The answer comes from trial, not theory.
The first season
Plant it. Water it. Watch it. Note the cracks in the soil when it’s time to water again. Record how long it takes to sprout, how tall it gets in a week, how the leaves change when it’s thirsty.
The first season is about paying attention to what the plant tells you—not what the seed packet promises.
The fixes
The second season is where the mistakes become lessons. Too much sun? Move it. Not enough water? Adjust the schedule. Pests? Try neem oil, then try again if it doesn’t work. The notes aren’t just instructions—they’re the things that didn’t work the first time.
What we will not do
We won’t pretend every plant thrives in every climate. We won’t ignore the fact that some seeds are harder to start than others. We won’t act like gardening is always easy—or that failure isn’t part of the process.
